Limestone is actively used in metallurgy as one of technologically necessary products participating in the majority of processes of transformation of ore to metal.
For example, production of one ton of steel or cast iron demands more than 50 kg of not extinguished lime. Lime is the main slag purifying iron ore from which as a result of a chain of difficult technological processes receive steel or cast iron.
Also in metallurgical industry limestone is necessary as gumboil. Gumboil (plaven) is an inorganic substance which is added to ore when smelting metals for decrease in temperature of melting. The choice of gumboil depends on a sort of melting and on composition of ores. Limy or magnesian plaven use in nine of ten steel works.
It should be noted one more important moment when using limestone in metallurgy. Calcareous products when melting form a protective layer of slag on a steel surface, including when molding on a surface of liquid steel in a ladle. As a result slag effectively reduces losses of heat by production that allows to save energy resources.
In steel industry lime is used also for water processing in the same way, as in the mining industry and metallurgy.
